Martin Scorsese

Scorsese was an American Actor, writer and most famously; a director.
Scorsese's films develop focus around ideas of guilt, redemption, conflict, gang culture and modern crime. His films were known in Hollywood for explicit depiction of violence and profanity.

Scorsese is probably one of the most renowned director/producer, virtually defining the state of modern cinema in the 70' and 80s. His passion for film making was defined in the quality and excitement in his films.

Scorsese plays with the temporality of film, the continuous illusion. Scorsese is forever manipulating this dream, and yet he does it so artfully that the audience, rather than being annoyed at this disjunction when his cuts call attention to themselves, and therefore to the fact that we are watching a movie, finds that the film is enhanced. For example, Scorsese has put the freeze frame to use many, many times. Just in Goodfellas alone.

David Fincher

 An American director, born in Denver. Started working in the film industry when he was just 18 years old. On his path to fame he directed TV commercials and music videos, and with this he was quite successful directing for Nike, Coca Cola and big brands alike. His starter career also involved directing music videos for Madonna and Michael Jackson.

incher mainly directs thriller genre films, specifically psychological thrillers such as Gone Girl and Fight Club.

Trademarks:

• Fincher has been know for his singe frame insert
• He has a unique visual style where dark lighting is combined with a colour overlay filter and crisp cinematography. Most importantly the colour pallet of his films are all very similar. this is usually black with other colours of gold and blue, the colours usually have some sort of symbolism related to the topic of the film.
• Fincher likes to cover the faces of his characters in shadows so that we don’t know who they are. This technique allows him to show action that is necessary to move the story forward without giving anything away too soon to the audience.
